An adult complete nutrition formula should provide the best there is for fully-grown dogs. Pedigree incorporates necessary vitamins, minerals, zinc, and omega fatty acids to provide a balanced and nutritious meal. The first ingredient in good food for dogs should always be a source of meat. In this case, Pedigree dropped the ball in a big way with corn being the first ingredient.

Remember, the first ingredient should always be a protein from a clear meat source. For this particular puppy food, it is again not the case.

As said above, healthy joints need large amounts of chondroitin and glucosamine to maintain. It’s a good idea to introduce healthy joint food early on in your pup’s diet to avoid issues into adulthood.

Pedigree Dog Food Recall History

Pedigree dog food has been recalled a few times in the past. The most recent incident being on August 31st of 2014. Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition Dry Dog Food was recalled from Sam’s Club, a retail company. The bags of dog food were said to contain metal fragments that would injure your dog if consumed.

Just a few days before, on August 26th of 2014 select bags of the same recipe was recalled from Dollar General Stores in the US. The presence of foreign material in these bags was the cause of the recalls.

In June 2012, a voluntary recall was announced by Mars Petcare, the manufacturer of Pedigree, for Pedigree Weight Management canned dog foods due to blue plastic mixed in with the food.

Way back in September of 2008, all the products that were manufactured in Everson, Pennsylvania were recalled due to a potential salmonella scare.

A month before that, in August 2008, Mars Petcare announced a voluntary recall for the same reason, but this time with the Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites recipe. There were no reports of dogs contracting salmonella from the recalled line.

Which Dogs Can Eat Pedigree Dog Food?

Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition for Dogs

Adult dogs that need balanced nutrition can turn to this recipe. It also supports healthy digestion while nourishing the skin and coat with the added omega-6 fatty acids. Most adult dogs of any breed are suited to this formula.

Pedigree Complete Nutrition for Puppies

Puppies need the right amount of nutrients to grow into healthy dogs. The puppy recipes include DHA for brain development. Keep your puppy physically and mentally strong. Small to medium-sized breeds will benefit from this formula.

Pedigree Large Breed Dog Food

Large dogs need sufficient energy but not too much to make them grow too quickly. Joint protection is also something they need. With chondroitin and glucosamine, your dog will have a good chance of avoiding hip and elbow dysplasia. Big breeds suited for this are Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Bloodhounds, Boxers, etc.

Pedigree Small Breed Dog Food

Tiny dogs need a large amount of nutrition. Their growth period is only for 10 months, which means they need a high amount of nutrients in a short amount of time. Dogs suited to the small breed dog food are the Boston Terrier, Bichon Frise, Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, Pug, Chihuahua, etc.

Pedigree Healthy Weight Dog Food

This low-fat blend is great for maintaining your dog’s weight, helping them lose weight or for dogs that are less active. Ask your vet if your pooch should have low-fat dog food. Less active breeds include the Bullmastiff, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chow Chow, Basset Hound, etc.

Conclusion

Although they strive to give your pet the best, it is still considered a grocery store pet food. The lack of protein from a clear meat source as the prime ingredient is not a good sign. Judging by the ingredients alone, Pedigree is a relatively healthy brand that would be a good choice on a budget.
